BH Consulting has become a partner of the GDPR Awareness Coalition. The non-profit initiative aims to increase understanding of data privacy obligations under the forthcoming EU regulation.
BH Consulting joins a list of more than 80 partner companies and over 100 ambassadors. The coalition includes GDPR experts, vendors, and partners in the legal and financial sectors, as well as event partners, and business groups.
The General Data Protection Regulation, or EU GDPR, safeguards the privacy of EU citizens. It will apply from 25 May 2018. It is a unified legal framework that provides guidelines for collecting and processing any information that could identify a living person. Ireland’s Data Protection Commissioner, Helen Dixon, has described the new regulation as a “game changer” for individuals and organisations.
The GDPR Awareness Coalition launched in response to low levels of awareness in Ireland about the new rules. Levels of understanding about GDPR’s implications vary widely. Many multinationals already have GDPR on their radar, but sectors like retail and construction have much lower awareness levels.
Given the complex subject matter, the coalition has opted for a simple approach. One of its initiatives is to create and distribute 60 infographics that explain the regulation for various industries and organisation sizes. The group is active on all major social media platforms. You can follow its progress using the hashtag #simpleGDPR. There’s more information available at www.gdprcoalition.ie.
Adding its own voice to awareness-raising initiatives, BH Consulting will hold two information briefings on 25 May, exactly a year to the day before the regulation comes into effect.
The events will feature presentations from BH Consulting founder Brian Honan, who recently authored a white paper on GDPR for Tripwire. Also speaking are the respected privacy law expert Linda NiChualladh of An Post and Clive Nightingale of Certification Europe.
The briefings will be held at Buswells Hotel in Dublin. The morning session runs from 8-10am and an afternoon briefing is scheduled for 12-2pm. You can find out more details, and links to sign up for the events, here.
