Today, January 28th, marks the second International Data Protection Day.  Throughout North America and the European Union there are numerous activities to mark the day.

In Ireland the Minister for Education and Science Mary Hanafin in association with the Data Protection Commissioner launched a new educational resource on data protection and privacy aimed at second level schools.

Today also saw the Data Protection Commissioner launch an online video competition via YouTube.  The theme for the competition is “Privacy in the 21st Century”.  Interestingly this was also the theme that we used for Global Security Week 2007.  The winning entry will win a €5,000 prize with €3,000 and €2,000 available to the runners up.  Entries to the competition should be posted to YouTube

For privacy related resources you can download free material from the Global Security Week 2007 website and also the BlogPrivacy in the 21st Century” contains some interesting information.

Update 29/01/08

Digital Rights Ireland has an excellent posting relating to International Data Protection Day.  I strongly recommend you take a look at their Blog and follow some of the advice given there.
