Data Protection Day, which is an initiative of the Council of Europe with the support of the European Commission, was celebrated on January 28th by 27 European countries, the United States and Canada. The day was created to raise awareness and generate discussion about data protection and privacy rights and best practices.

The Irish Computer Society celebrated this year’s Data Protection Day by announcing the launch of its inaugural ICS Data Protection Conference which will take place on the 2nd April at the Hilton Hotel, Charlemont Place, Dublin 2. In an effort to make data protection information accessible to all data protection professionals, ICS have priced this conference at less than a third of the price of similar data protection conferences held in Ireland at €400.  Also ICS members and graduates of the ICS data protection certifications can avail of a 37.5% discount (pay only €250) to attend this conference.

Data protection compliance presents ever-greater challenges to organisations in today’s rapidly evolving workplace. As a not-for-profit organisation with responsibility for promoting and supporting both the IT profession and general IT literacy, the Irish Computer Society (ICS) plays a significant role in helping the Data Protection Commissioner’s office to educate individuals in this area.

ICS has pioneered the country’s first certified data protection practitioner training programmes: a 1-day introductory course and a 3-day practitioner course. ICS has also founded the ICS Privacy Forum, a dedicated networking space for data protection professionals or those with an interest in data protection and privacy issues. The ICS Privacy Forum provides a platform for professionals across all industries to learn about the latest data protection best practices through regular seminars, workshops and online resources.

ICS plans to use these resources and knowledge to host our first data protection conference. Topics to be discussed and debated on the day will include: Access requests, data breaches, record management, security, audits, individual rights and many more. This is an event not to be missed by anyone with data protection responsibilities who wishes to stay up to date with current best practice.
